Offshore wind: challenges and opportunities of the first project in Latin america

In the third episode of Comunidad Valiant, we talked with Juan Jose Gari, Regional Manager at Deep Wind Offshore . We discussed the path the region is taking, the challenges posed by a project of this type, and why Chile was the chosen country to develop its first project in LATAM.

The global and regional outlook

The world has already installed over 83 GW of offshore wind capacity, with China and Europe leading the way. Furthermore, there is a projection of an additional 2,000$ GW by 2050. Latin America is in the early stages, but it has everything ahead of it.

Offshore wind is key to decarbonization. It also allows for the addition of firm power near major industrial and urban centers, which is something other renewables do not always achieve.

There are concrete opportunities for Brazil in the short term, and for Argentina and Uruguay in the medium term. However, these require a clear roadmap and strong execution capabilities.

The strategic window

Offshore wind represents a strategic window. It allows for matrix diversification, attracting investment, and strengthening regional providers. But there are no shortcuts: it requires vision, robust regulatory frameworks, and partnerships between industry, government, and finance.
